The Quad-City Steamwheelers today will appeal an arenafootball2 league suspension of receiver/linebacker defensive back Matt Manuma handed down Tuesday for his involvement in a game-ending scrum in a Saturday win over Tennessee Valley.

Coach Rick Frazier could not comment on the length of the suspension but said the Steamwheelers hope at least to get the severity of the punishment reduced.

Manuma was involved in altercation in front of the Tennessee Valley bench that led officials to call off the game with 13 seconds left and the Steamwheelers leading 59-21.

Tennessee Valley lineman Stanley Primus appeared to swing a helmet from the bench after Manuma made a tackle along the sideboards and Manuma reacted.

“I think there is going to be a penalty but what has been discussed is severe,” Frazier said. “We will have our day in court.”

If Manuma misses Saturday’s game in Louisville, his loss likely will be felt. He backs up both receiver/defensive back Tim Dodge and receiver/linebacker Jack Walker. He also is a key special teams performer.

“It’s going to be a big loss if we lose him,” Frazier said.

Newly signed receiver/defensive back Jimmy Levins could be activated in his place.
