TODAY: Officials who gathered Tuesday to dedicate the newly formed Pride Lake at Scott County Park took a minute just to admire the site, which was recently a muddy swamp.

Now eight acres in size, the glistening lake is another amenity in the park, one of the most popular recreation areas in the Quad-City region.

The project was dedicated to Larry Mattusch, who retires this month as the Scott County engineer and the person who first suggested the project. Mattusch’s County Roads Department teamed with the Scott County Conservation Department to build what formerly was called Lake Odetta.

Roads employee Bernie Heidgerken operated an excavator to dig out the lake and put the dirt in waiting dump trucks. It took almost four years to complete the job, and Heidgerken said he lost count of the number of dump trucks filled with dirt.

The lake will be stocked with fish this autumn and be ready for a fishing season next year, Scott County Conservation Director Roger Kean said.
