Larry Fisher/QUAD-CITY TIMES Repair work began Monday on the Interstate 74 bridge overpass on State Street in Bettendorf, closing two eastbound lanes of traffic. The overpass was damaged by a truck last January.

A steel girder repair project on the approach to the Interstate 74 bridge over State Street in Bettendorf began Monday and will continue today.

The project is scheduled for completion by July 1.

All work will be conducted during daytime hours with some weekend work possible. Two lanes of traffic on State Street (U.S. 67) will be closed during the repair work. The State Street entrance ramp in Bettendorf will still be open for Illinois-bound traffic during the construction.

The work entails straightening the steel beams under the approach that were bent during January. A piece of heavy equipment being hauled on a flatbed semitrailer struck the underside of the overpass, damaging three I-beams.

Civil Constructors Inc. of East Moline was awarded the $73,900 contract.

Also, the Iowa Department of Transportation announced that the right-hand lane of the Illinois-bound lanes of the Interstate 74 bridge will be closed from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. today for inspection and guardrail repair. The Grant Street entrance ramp also will be closed, but the State Street ramp will remain open.
