TIPTON, Iowa — The Cedar County Board of Supervisors has accepted the resignation of Betty Ellerhoff, Cedar County auditor and Commissioner of Elections, to be effective April 10. She has accepted the position of finance director for the City of West Branch, which she expects to give her more time for family and personal interests.
Ellerhoff has worked for Cedar County for more than 20 years, and has been auditor for almost seven years. She was deputy auditor under Patty Meixner.
Ellerhoff recommended that supervisors allow a replacement to be hired if someone from the office is appointed auditor. Another recommendation is that the human resources/benefits position, held by Michelle Brennan, be made a separate department instead of a part of the auditor’s office.
When supervisors asked whether any of the auditor’s office staff would like to apply for the position, Cari Gritton, first deputy, indicated she is interested. The board met with her in a closed session at her request, and then stated its intention to fill the vacancy by appointment. Official action is scheduled for April 10.
The board prepared a public notice that electors of the county have the right to petition for a special election to fill the vacancy. A minimum of 970 signatures of eligible electors of the county are needed. A petition must be filed in the Cedar County Auditor’s Office within 14 days after official publication, or within 14 days after the appointment, whichever is later. If a special election is decided, it will be held in July.
