The future bioswale and green roof project at the developing Scott Community College site in Bettendorf has received a $25,000 grant from the Iowa Environmental Protection Commission, part of the Iowa Department of Natural Resources.
“This is great,” said Kathy Wine, director of River Action, Inc., Davenport. Wine, a project coordinator, noted the commission also had made a large grant that enabled educational outreach efforts at Davenport’s Nahant Marsh.
In Bettendorf, Scott Community College is renovating the former Eagle’s grocery store near 18th Street and Spruce Hills Drive. The City of Bettendorf and the college are working with River Action to create the bioswale — a way to naturally filter water — and design a green roof for the building to greatly reduce the runoff of stormwater and contaminants.
The practices will be subsequently taught and promoted through River Action and by the college’s environmental education program. Wine said the plans are ready to go, but there are a few details to be completed before the actual design is made. “They’ve given us a big boost,” she said.
