LIME SPRINGS, Iowa — A 2-year-old girl died after an apparent accident in which she locked herself inside a hope chest.

The Howard County Sheriff’s office said Shelby Rose Burke had been put down for a nap about noon on Thursday while her aunt, Amy Burke, began to get ready for work.

About 2 p.m., Burke woke Amanda Burke, her sister and Shelby’s mother, to tell her she would be leaving soon, authorities said.

The women discovered Shelby wasn’t in her bed when they went to check on her. After searching the house, they found the girl inside the chest.

Authorities said the child apparently crawled into the chest and when the lid closed and latched, she had no way of opening it from the inside.

Shelby was unresponsive when found and did not appear to be breathing. She was pronounced dead on arrival at a hospital in Cresco.

Details from an autopsy performed Friday are not yet available. The death is being treated as accidental, pending the outcome of the autopsy.
