Bettendorf

n Book discussion — Psychologist Deborah Van Speybroeck will lead a discussion about Carl Honore's book, "In Praise of Slowness: How a World Wide Movement is Changing the Cult of Speed" at 3:30 p.m. Aug. 9 at Bettendorf Public Library, 2950 Learning Campus Drive, Davenport. Davenport

n Bob the Builder — Children's television star Bob the Builder will visit the Davenport Public Library, 321 Main St., Davenport, at 2 p.m. Aug. 6. A special story time featuring Bob the Builder stories will begin at 1:30 p.m. No registration is required.

n Library closing — The Davenport Public Library will be closed Saturday due to the Quad-City Times Bix 7 and Bix Beiderbecke Memorial Jazz Festival. The Annie Wittenmyer branch will be open for its regular hours.

n Builders Bash — The Davenport Public Library will celebrate the end of its summer reading program with a LEGO building competition at 2:30 p.m. Aug. 6 at the library, 321 Main St., Davenport. Participants will be divided into categories for ages 4-7, 8-12 and 13 to adult. Quad-City Times columnist Bill Wundram will serve as master of ceremonies, and Times staffer Linda Cook and Star 93.5's Steve Donovan will be among the celebrity judges. Eldridge, Iowa

n Tea with Cinderella — Countryside Theater will present "Tea with Cinderella," a program of games, crafts and tea, from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday at Scott County Library, 200 N. 6th Ave., Eldridge.

n ‘Escape School' — The Scott County Library will host "Escape School," an opportunity for students to learn safety measures against strangers, fires and bicycle safety, at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Scott County Library, 200 N. 6th Ave., Eldridge. The event is free, but registration is encouraged. To register, call (563) 285-4794, Ext. 229.

n Artist to speak —Pam Ohnemus, artist in residence with the Scott County Library System, will present a video and lecture entitled, "America's Lost Landscape" at 6 p.m. Thursday at Scott County Library, 200 N. 6th Ave., Eldridge.

Moline

n Global languages — Moline Public Library has received a grant from the Illinois State Library to enhance the library's collection of materials to reflect the diversity of the community. "Global Languages, Local Impact" materials include English as a Second Language, bilingual and foreign language materials in a variety of formats, including books, DVDs, CDs, and audio tapes and are available at both library branches.

Rock Island

n Catch-a-Catfish — As part of the Catch-a-Catfish environmental education project, a painted catfish is on display in the lobby of the 19th Street entrance at Rock Island Public Library, 401 19th St., Rock Island. Rock Island Clean and Beautiful organized the project to promote environmental education, conservation and recycling. About 20 painted catfish will be on display at Rock Island businesses and organizations until the catfish auction Aug. 21.

n Independent film — The Australian film, "The Rage in Lake Placid," will be shown at 7 p.m. Aug. 5 in the Community Room of the Rock Island Main Library, 401 19th St., Rock Island. The screening is free and open to the public.
