Students showcase leadership projects

Students from six area high schools presented their projects and graduated during the final session of the Student Leadership Academy at Deere & Co. World Headquarters.


Five teams of juniors from Alleman, Rock Island, Moline, Sherrard and United Township high schools presented marketing projects to help fellow students understand that they can make a difference. The projects included a variety of mediums.


The students, picked by area counselors as having leadership potential, attended six sessions of the academy. They heard business leaders speak, toured Rock Island County resources, learned about volunteer opportunities and performed career development activities.


Participants included:


Alleman —  Jean Crompton, Andrew Doyle, Erin Gillman, Amanda Henry, Alex Knobloch.


Moline — Dylan Raes, Jessica Starkweather, Codey Taylor, Maggie Swanson, Jose Sanchez, Annika Tunberg, Evan Rodts, Carolyn Doroba, Amy Strandlund, Megan Duquette.


Rock Island — Alex Seiver, Michael Dechert, Anne Ledford, Ali Teager, Andy Colgan, Nick Camlin.


Sherrard — Stephanie Finch, Bill Holdsworth, Becky Holdsworth, Matthew Nice, Brian Felt, Tanya Anderson.


United Township  — Alison Ziegler, Paula Juhn, Ryan Wallace, Kyle Johnson, Megan Reisenbigler, Shechinah Tinsley, Andrew May.


Advisors from the business community who assisted the group were Susan O'Brien Brockway, Tyson Fresh Meats; Jennette Waterman, Success Network; Heather Pederson, Integrity Integrated; Natalie Gendron, Gendron Advertising; and Molly Tiernan Fuller, Illinois Quad-City Chamber of Commerce.


Megan Duquette, Moline, and Alex Knobloch, Alleman, were chosen as winners of the Karli Kell Leadership Award. Karli Kell was a 2001 graduate of the academy who died in a car accident in 2002.


The program promotes School-to-Work goals of workforce preparation, career exploration, skill development and community revitalization.
